About Emily

Emily Stott is an American mezzo-soprano, currently working in Kansas City, Missouri, performing on stages around the Kansas City area with the UMKC Conservatory, Landlocked Opera, and Midwest Opera Theater, and beyond.

After a fach change in early 2020, Emily discovered that her true identity lies in the mezzo-soprano repertoire. Currently, Emily is forging ahead, building a career as a mezzo-soprano, working with roles like Dorabella (Cosí fan tutte), Charlotte (Werther), Carmen (Carmen, Bizet) and Dalila (Samson et Dalila, Saint- Saëns).

Emily can be seen in June of 2023 as a performer for Come As You Are: Vulnerability in the Concert Space, presented in partnership with No Divide KC and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Come As You Are is intended to break down barriers of accessibility through reimagined musical experiences and storytelling in the concert space. Stott will perform new works by composers Meta Cohen, Kelvyn Koning, and Leah Reid.

A proponent of new music, Ms. Stott has recently been in collaborations with a group of musicians and prominent KC composer/artist, Stacy Busch, on the compositional process of Busch’s new piece, She Breathes Fire. This work is a new premiere that involves acoustic and electronics, with all of the electronic music being generated using the voice as well. The work will premiere the weekend of October 6th-8th, 2023, at City Stage Theater in Union Station, KC, with Owen/Cox Dance Group.

Ms. Stott holds a Master’s degree in Opera Performance from the UMKC Conservatory in Kansas City, under the study of Dr. Maria Kanyova. Emily lives with her partner, soprano Kelli Van Meter, and their three cats, Morris, Bonnie, and Marietta. Emily is an advocate for the plus-sized community and an activist for racial equity and human rights. Outside of the rehearsal room, Emily loves camping in the mountains, baking sweet treats, and playing board games.
